چکیده

BACKGROUND: To explore the use of Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) to screen maintenance hemodialysis patients at nutritional risk in Taiwan. METHODS: GNRI was used to assess nutritional risk in 179 hemodialysis patients. Two sets of GNRI cutoff values and a ‘no nutrition-related’ risk assessment were used to divide patients into groups with different nutrition-related risks. For each classification method, clinical characteristics and various nutrition-related indices of patients at nutritional risk were compared. RESULTS: Approximately, 4%, 10%, 27%, and 59% of the 179 maintenance hemodialysis patients had major, moderate, low, and absent nutrition-related risk, respectively. There were significant differences in age, body mass index (BMI), duration of dialysis, albumin, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, uric acid, cholesterol and triglyceride levels among major, moderate, low and absent nutritional risk groups (P < 0.05). Using a cutoff value of ≤ 91.2, 14% of the maintenance hemodialysis patients were malnourished. GNRI positively correlated with albumin, BUN, creatinine, glucose, and duration of dialysis (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The use of GNRI to screen for malnutrition in dialysis patients on maintenance should be supported with more validation studies. We recommend the combined use of GNRI and other validated tools for nutritional screening in maintenance dialysis patients.

Simplified nutritional screening tools for patients on maintenance hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND Malnutrition is a prevalent complication in patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Nutritional screening tools may be useful to identify those patients at nutritional risk from among hundreds of hemodialysis patients in a large facility. OBJECTIVE We tested several simplified nutritional screening tools on hemodialysis patients to validate the potential application of the tools. D...

Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index as a Simple Predictor of Mortality in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: A Single Center Study

Background: Malnutrition is associated with higher risk of mortality in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. The geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) has been developed as a tool to assess the nutritional risk. Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to examine the significance of the GNRI as a mortality predictor in MHD patients. Methods: We retrospectively examined the GNRI of...

Evaluation of the efficacy of nutritional screening tools to predict malnutrition in the elderly at a geriatric care hospital

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Malnutrition in the elderly is a serious problem, prevalent in both hospitals and care homes. Due to the absence of a gold standard for malnutrition, herein we evaluate the efficacy of five nutritional screening tools developed or used for the elderly. SUBJECTS/METHODS Elected medical records of 141 elderly patients (86 men and 55 women, aged 73.5 ± 5.2 years) hospitaliz...

Assessing risk screening methods of malnutrition in geriatric patients: Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) versus Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI).

INTRODUCTION Elderly subjects are considered a vulnerable group and they have more risk of nutritional problems. The risk of malnutrition increases in hospitalized geriatric patients. OBJECTIVES To compare the correlation between MNA and GNRI with anthropometric, biochemical and Barthel Index in hospitalized geriatric patients and to test the concordance between MNA and GNRI and between Mini ...

The Effect of Oral Nutritional Supplement on Nutritional Status of Hemodialysis Patients in a Military Hospital

Background and Aim: Malnutrition is a common problem for hemodialysis patients, leading to reduced quality of life, increased hospitalization, and increased mortality. Evaluation of nutritional status is one of the main determinants of the clinical status. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of oral nutritional supplements (Iso Whey) on the nutritional status of hemodialysis pat...
